embracing change in today’s workplace

RID, IIDA, LEED AP
Past Division Director

As Registered Interior Designers (RID), we are required to participate in Continuing Education Program Hours (CEPH) pertinent to the health, safety, and welfare of the public.  Fortunately for designers, many companies are working hard to present us with exciting, new program options.  These days, it’s relatively easy to sign up for interesting, relevant, and fun courses that help meet our CEPH requirements while furthering our passion for the interior design industry.

I recently attended WorkplaceOne, a fantastic continuing education unit presented by Kerry Walton, RID with Teknion and hosted by OfficeSource, Ltd. Here are some of my notes from the event:

organically L.E.D.

RID, IIDA, LEED AP
President

Everything seems to be under the sea or in the sky with these organic LED light fixtures I discovered during a recent trip to Europe!

(Left to right, from top to bottom)

1. Softly colored purple orbs are playful and beautiful.

2. Cloud-like fixtures create in an indoor skyscape.

3. An indoor grassy experience is complimented by fragmented light fixtures.

4. This fixture bears a striking resemblance to a creature of the sea.

5. Bursts of color cover this corridor wall.

6. Is it a cluster of pendants, or a cluster of jellyfish?

7. Woven rings bask in a green glow.

8. This could be mistaken for the home of thousands of silk worms.

9. Defracted light creates a wall of stars.

Happy New Year!

This week we’re kicking off 2011 by reflecting back on one of our favorite  multi-family projects, Crescent Austin, a development by Riverside Resources completed back in 2008. Recent award recognition from the Building of America Network has brought back fond memories of PPDS’ collaboration with Kelly Grossman Architects, LLC to design this hip 169 Unit luxury apartment project.  The Building of America Network has recognized this project as one of the Country’s most innovative, unique, and challenging projects.  Crescent Austin is located in the beloved urban SoCo [South Congress] district, just minutes away from several of Austin’s most unique attractions. This project highlights a contemporary palette of bright colors, playful finishes, unique textures, and sleek furnishings.

the joy of travel

IIDA
Project Designer

As designers, we are always on a quest for inspiration and a fresh approach to our field. What better way to spark your creativity than through exploring new cities with a camera in hand? Design inspiration can be found in all aspects travel, old and new, including (but certainly not limited to) the food, the locals, the vegetation, and the architecture. These are just a few of my favorite shots from a recent trip to Germany and France.

From left to right, top to bottom:

1. At the Audi museum in  Ingolstadt, Germany

2. On the streets of Dijon, France

3. In a berry tree forest in downtown Strasbourg, France

4. Staying dry from the rain outside of the Louvre in Paris, France

5. Pedestrians outside of the Louvre in Paris, France

6. Christmas shopping at the Bon Marché in Paris, France

7.  A window display at a men’s store in Paris, France

8. A bird flying under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France

9. The Art Nouveau subway entrance at Saint-Michel in Paris, France

going, going, gone!

RID, IIDA, LEED AP
President

We’re not going too far out on a limb here by saying that the incredible success of Austin’s first (and possibly only) multi-family project completed in 2010 has a lot to do with the first-class quality of its architecture and interior design. Quarry Hill is a uniquely designed apartment community located Southwest Austin. It is the most recent in a long line of outstanding developments by The Larry Peel Company, with whom PPDS has had a lasting working relationship. The Larry Peel Company also collaborated with Rosales Partners Real Estate Development and Kelly Grossman Architects, LLC for the project.

So what sets this apartment community apart from its competitors? Continue reading

a new environment for 360 partners…

RID, IIDA, LEED AP
Past Project Designer

No one likes the actual ‘moving’ part of a move but having a space like this to move into would certainly make the process more exciting! This office in northwest Austin was recently given an overdue face-lift and now has a life of its own as a result.

PPDS was delighted to assist 360 Partners in designing their new corporate headquarters. We provided a space plan that made sense with the company’s team-style approach, utilizing groupings of workstations that were separated but not isolated. The open feeling can be attributed to Continue reading
