DESIGN TRENDS TO FOLLOW IN 2016

Now that the 2016 Vegas Furniture Market, Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and The International Surface Show (TISE) has officially wrapped up, it’s easy for us to spot the hottest trends for 2016! Take a look below to see what inspired each PPDS designer the most! What do you think? Which trends are here to stay? Which one is your favorite?

JANNA: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED – Unexpected shapes continue to excite the consumer.

The triangular tables/stools were fun and unique. The Danish chair with the fur seat reminded me of the World’s Best Restaurant in Copenhagen “Noma”.

The tufting which has been trending since the last market keeps refining its look. This is definitely a take-off on the classic English style.

Digital printing has taken design to a whole new level. You can now have your pet’s photo scanned and printed on fabric for pillows or on canvas to art. Take a look at this unique showing of pets.

LINDSEY: NATURAL MODERN – A fresh new take on the Modern style! While the shapes remain modern, the finishes took on a more natural state.  Wood throughout the showrooms appeared to be a softer tone with grain detail and live edge style remaining the focus.  Lighter, natural wood tones have mostly replaced the darker tones that have been seen in past years.  Metal was prevalent in every single showroom we went into and through. Iron and stainless could still be seen; copper, gold and rose gold tones dominated.

All categories of furnishing seemed to embrace and showcase these bright and sophisticated metal accents.  Whether polished or with a natural patina, metal accent pieces can be incorporated into any design style. Leather, hide and sheep hair continue to influence upholstery as well as accessories like rugs and pillows.  When paired with modern furniture these pieces soften the lines and make the space feel inviting and rich with texture.

WHITNEY: PANTONE’S COLORS OF THE YEAR – Pantone is a color resource not only used by interior design professionals but designers in the fashion, graphic arts, advertising, film and industrial industries as well, making their influence on a variety of markets very impactful. Since 2010 Pantone announces a “color of the year” and in 2016, not only one but two colors were crowned; “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity”.

My initial reaction to Pantone’s color of the year was “nice for a baby nursery, but not appropriate for the type of work we do”. Thankfully this year the Las Vegas Furniture Market taught me that I too could enjoy implementing these colors into my projects (in tasteful moderation, course) through art, lighting, accessories and even things found in nature. Here are a few of my favorite Las Vegas Finds:

KENDALL: TOP STANDOUTS – I discovered some unexpected and exciting trends this year at Las Vegas’ Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and Surfaces Show (TISE). KBIS and TISE showcase the industry’s latest and greatest products, appliances, trends and technologies.

-Black is back! And it looks even better in a sleek matte finish. I especially love this finish on kitchen and bath appliances!

-There was a heavy focus on built-in storage areas, luxurious appliances featured built-in coffee stations, wet bars, & wine refrigerators.

-The most popular color scheme includes black and all shades of grey, light grey, dark grey, brown grey.

-Polished chrome may have some stiff competition, incorporating new elements in kitchens and baths has been a growing trend but this year black silvers and golds; rose gold, bright gold, bronze and warm antiqued golds dominated.

LAURA: ANOTHER DIMENSION…ANOTHER DIMENSION…ANOTHER DIMENSION –  A very popular trend that we saw at the Las Vegas Kitchen and Bath show this year was highly dimensioned wall tiles. These sculpted tiles take texture to a whole new level! The sculptural characteristic of the tile really adds an artistic touch that goes beyond just surface treatment.  When paired with the right type of lighting, a dimensional wall tile can make a dramatic statement for any project. Here are just a few highly dimensioned wall tiles that caught my eye at the show!
